DMEF “Rising Stars” Awards Dinner – Five Next-Generation Marketing Leaders
by Jeff Gundersen
On June 5, 2012 at Gotham Hall in NYC, the DMEF Board, program and dinner sponsors, and guests gathered to honor five “Rising Stars” in Direct & Digital Marketing, representing a cross-section of the best Next-Generation Marketing Leaders under 40 years of age:
- Scott Ellis – VP, Client Solutions – Adworthy
- Linda Gharib – SVP, Marketing Integration – Citibank
- David Rosenbluth – VP, Marketing – Gerber Life Insurance Company
- Rob Reynolds – VP, Marketing Planning & Analysis – Guthy-Renker
- Jonathan Sander – Director, Social Media & Planning – Mason Zimbler
As a member of the Board of Trustees of DMEF (Direct Marketing Educational Foundation), I have been pleased to work with Terri Barlett (DMEF’s President) and other Board members to help attract, educate, and place college students in direct/interactive marketing careers.
As a longstanding marketing-specialized boutique executive search and personal branding firm, we are constantly in search of Next-Generation Marketers for our global clients. Today, with digital/interactive/social/mobile marketing representing 30+% of total marketing spending and growing rapidly, Next-Generation Marketers (in addition to branding) must have solid core competencies in direct marketing combined with experience in all forms of digital/interactive marketing, including e-commerce, social media, and mobile.
Further to their vision of being the leader in helping college students be market-ready for successful direct/interactive marketing careers, DMEF has pioneered academic curriculum programs in partnership with many top colleges and universities like Harvard, Dartmouth, and NYU. DMEF members and sponsors, as well as members of DMA (The Direct Marketing Association), also help fund a number of placement programs for college students. These include Student Career Forums, Summer Programs in Interactive Marketing & Marketing Analytics, Job Postings for Internships and Entry-level Career Positions, and an innovative “Next Generation Leaders Program”—a 12-month rotational residency for top graduates interested in direct and interactive marketing careers.
Two of this year’s Rising Stars Award recipients (Linda Gharib and David Rosenbluth) are rapidly progressing marketing leaders on the client side. Three recipients (Scott Ellis, Rob Reynolds, and Jonathan Sander) are high-achievers on the direct and interactive agency side. All these Rising Stars have solid direct marketing skills and significant digital marketing accomplishments.
Perhaps the most impressive illustration of today’s rapidly changing marketing landscape is Jonathan Sander, a 24-year old, Director of Social Media at Mason Zimbler, who graduated from U. Texas in 2010 and is already seen as a leader in social media planning. With so many new “best practices” emerging in the digital/social/mobile areas, age and years of experience are less relevant than thought leadership and innovation in the new frontiers of marketing.
If you are interested in the work being conducted by DMEF, and are interested to potentially serve as a Board member or become a sponsor and supporter, please contact me directly to set up a call or meeting to discuss.
