Purchasing Manager, Cannabis Industry
Client Background
Our rapidly growing client is one the earliest publicly traded companies serving the legal cannabis industry. We are assisting them in completing their merchandising, supply chain, and marketing organizations. This is an entrepreneurial environment that is looking for B2B and B2C talent to mature business processes while supporting continued rapid expansion. Candidates will be self confident and able to operate in a dynamic environment while leading or participating in establishing and hardening merchandising, supply chain, and ecommerce processes.

Position Summary
The Purchasing Manager is responsible for managing all vendor replenishment activities including planning, organizing, monitoring and controlling all aspects of vendor purchasing to deliver in-stock and inventory objectives to achieve company Sales, GM, Inventory Turns, and GMROI goals. Works collaboratively throughout the organization, both domestically and internationally, to ensure that the right product is available at the right location, at the right time. Leads purchasing team leveraging 3rd party demand solution technologies to manage and review vendor performance, inventory flows, and to identify, develop, and implement efficient purchasing programs.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Managing and mentoring a dynamic team of purchasing professionals in fast paced growing industry.
- Establishing and maintaining measurable performance metrics for all levels of purchasing activities to include but not limited to supplier performance, fill rates, on-time delivery, supplier quality, order placement, buyer activity, and financial (AP) performance including sales, inventory turns, gross margin dollars, and GMROI.
- Partner with the organization’s management in the evaluation and selection of vendors as well as the negotiation of purchase contracts or service level agreements.
- Evaluates and develops processes to streamline the purchasing function.
- Report to management the measurable status of progress and corrective actions as it pertains to supplier and inventory performance.
- Ensure performance improvement and recovery plans are developed, issued, tracked and reported on as required.
- Negotiate and execute with vendor, purchase order placement, item lead times, minimum orders, and all other facets related to purchasing product. Develop and negotiate corrective actions with non-performing vendors.
- Compiles data from a wide variety of sources for the purpose of analyzing issues, ensuring compliance with a variety of policies, procedures, and goals.
- Coordinates activities and functions for the purpose of ensuring best practices in purchasing.
- Analyze trends, delivering upon change improvement opportunities that provide efficiency gains or financial savings with vendors.
- Participate as an integral part of key presentations of vendor analyses, and other deliverables in support of the Senior Management team.
- Subject matter expert providing key inputs for vendor analysis/scorecards to support corporate teams.
- Develops an overall vendor base which creates and sustains a competitive advantage, utilizing global market exploitation, leveraging spend, and leveraging of technologies.
- Provides support to New Program Teams as required to meet target costs and establish program cost models.
- Negotiates with vendors for the purpose of ensuring purchases are within budgeted requirements.
- Performs personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating, supervising, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving objectives within budget.
- Other duties as assigned by manager or designee.
Qualifications & Skills Required
- 7-10 years progressive experience in Purchasing & Sourcing with extensive experience in the manufacturing and wholesale industry, preferably in a strategic setting in a mid to large size organization.
- Must demonstrate the ability to operate at both the tactical and strategic levels
- Good understanding of packaging components and associated commodities.
- Solid track record meeting inventory reduction targets
- Bachelor’s degree in Purchasing, Production/Operations Management, or Engineering or equivalent business experience.
- Must be proficient in working with and optimizing demand driven software.
- Strong computer skills, ideally with experience using Windows-based PC programs.
- Ability to coordinate multiple group efforts within the company to achieve objectives.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, with awareness of deadlines.
- Ability to identify processes needing improvement, and to recommend improvements.
- Ability to manage, train and develop purchasing staff.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, or operations research
